Old vines in odd places: It’s a boy!

Last Sunday, Carey and I took to the highway—a last minute trip down to Richmond, Virginia for the birth of our nephew, Trent. While Carey’s nerves frazzled about the birthing process and the drive before us, I prepared in the only way I know how—selecting an appropriate bottle of wine. 100 year-old Zinfandel vines to celebrate a 1-day-old little man—works for me.

These old vine Zinfandels from Seghesio carry nice aging potential. My first shipment was of the 2006 vintage—two bottles that were left for a special occasion.

I had fun pretending that sneaking alcohol into a hospital is actually a difficult task. But, in reality, it’s quite easy—the nurses down south are very friendly, not the backpack-searching types. Still, I had a litany of excuses ready. “Please Ma’am, our new nephew’s father is allergic to Champagne. That includes California sparklers and Prosecco.” “Besides that burger we brought him yesterday, he’s been eating syrupy peaches for two days.” “My wife and I are big-time donors—money and organs.”

I brought four glasses, even though I wasn’t expecting the new mom to indulge. I didn’t want to be unprepared, had she been looking forward to a little post-op vin.

Cheers!

I don’t know if it was the excitement of my son’s birth or fear of getting busted by the nurse posse, but that Seghesio was dynamite. Robby and Carey – thanks for sharing! I wish I had a bottle now, but it looks like I’ll have to settle for a Box o’ Targe’ in the fridge!
