A goodbye to a good town. Carey fired-up the stove for the last time tonight and I picked the last bottle of wine out of the fridge. I poured a glass and sat down on the couch and asked Eli to join me for a talk.
“E, it’s time we told you. If you haven’t noticed, the reason we have been packing the boxes you’ve been chewing holes in for the last month is because we are moving away. That’s right; this is our second to last night.”
He did not react well:
[What...?]
[Last man standing: 2005 Clos Du Val Merlot.]
From my tasting notebook:
A Merlot that dares to be different, and/or not boring. It’s dark and vegetal, offering deep fruit sweetness tamed. It’s neither vanilla- or oak-sodden. Blended with 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and pure old world chemistry, at $17 the CDV Merlot gives the Right Bank of Bordeaux a big old smack.
The nose is rich, dark and spicy, stinking brilliantly of leather, tobacco, and licorice. Impressive acidity and smart tannins—some of which have fallen as sediment in the bottom of the bottle. Regal black fruit, blackberry and blueberry, and a finish that floats like a silk ribbon.
House, you have served us well. This is bittersweet, but certainly right. Most of all, I will miss sitting at the C&C live desk (couch and coffee table), Eli perched at my shoulder and Carey just off to my right, lying on a sheepskin rug in front of the fire, whirring away on her laptop.
See you in a few days from VT!
Enjoy!
-Rob.

Wishing you guys the BESTEST!!! Can’t wait to see photos of Carey in your new surroundings! I know everything will turn out well.
Eli, you’re priceless. Mo says “hi & good luck!”
Thanks Elena! I can’t wait to take pictures of C standing in every snow drift in southern VT!
Best of luck to you both. Wish we could have met up in ‘Toga for a glass and chat but will most definitely enjoy your VT postings!
Thanks so much Wendy! We are going to miss ‘Toga in a big way—I will always be proud to have lived there. Stay in touch! -Rob.
Welcome Rob and Carrie! Advice from a lifer (i think 17 years counts don’t you?)….go outside and often. Force yourself! Bundle up and just do it. And a good glass of red tastes even better after being partially frozen….AND you’ll only be a stones throw from your favorite shop “Wines By George”.
Haha! Thanks for the comment! We just got to the house about an hour ago. The move is officially over! Can’t wait to see you guys.
Farewell, and good luck guys!
What a priceless expression on E’s face. I think maybe he was thinking you were moving to a warmer climate.
I look forward to C & C live from Vermont!
Wish that we were there, not necessarily for the moving day but to relax in Vt when it was all over. Got back last night so Eli’s friend B will be out of prison today. I got a bit misty when I read your last post. Please take Amy’s advice, particularly during mud season. Getting out is a must! Talk later.
Your cat looks like such a cutey.. Funny what you wrote about Californication.
Hope you guys are settling in. Give E my best. Poor thing. Change is tough! But pics from drifts will make up for it…and miiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.
xoxo,
Carrie
