French Pinot Noir tasting: Burgundy and Loire

Saturday was a good day. It was a sunny spring-like winter day in Brooklyn, and I just walked. My buddy Matt took me on a 4 mile wine store trek that swung us through Green Point at the midpoint, which is where his favorite wine store, Dandelion Wine, is located. Wine shops in BK aren’t big, but boutique by default, and shelf space is at a premium. It’s interesting to see the styles of wine they choose to stock. One thing is certain: France is big, and Burgundy is the star. Old world reigns supreme, California cult cabs hold little appeal, and Australia is relegated to the suburbs. It was fun to see and I was ready to participate.

I picked up 2 half bottles at Dandelion Wine. A Sancerre Pinot Noir and a Domaine Rollin red Burgundy.

At the top of Côte de Beaune, behind the Corton hill, is Pernand-Vergelesses, hidden in a charming valley. This is the only commune along the Côte d’Or to offer both red and white wine on all four levels – grand cru, premier cru, village and regional. -Bergman’s Bourgogne

A nose like a sharply dressed man. Ok—that wasn’t mine, but the heady musk and mixed florals reminded Carey of a perfect smelling dude at first nose. Rose water and dried herbs round out a gentle funk-free aroma profile—this is the most heavily perfumed Burgundy I have ever experienced.

The soft red fruit is almost secondary to the weave of herbals and florals. Sturdy tannins pull at the inside of the mouth and a cheese rind-like tang on the finish is sensational. A slight shoe polish aroma was drawn out after an hour under air. Odd but almost undetectable, and not the least bit unpleasant. Edgy and addictive to huff.

Pinot Noir is the red grape of the Centre-Loire, most famous in red Sancerre. These tend to be lighter wines than one often associates with this grape. -LoireValleyWine.com

Earthy pomegranate fruit, ruby transparency and very light. Very tart. Shockingly tart actually, almost lemon-like mouthfeel initially. Complex, confused, and wildly varied offering burnt match, sour goat cheese and tightly-sweet fruit aromas. A palate of melon and red raspberries, rhubarb and pork fat.

Nicely shook its initial dusty, raisin twist, in what I would consider nothing short of a shocking recovery.

Take advantage of half bottles. Save some money on smaller format bottles and taste side-by-side. I would have a whole cellar of 375 ml bottles if I could only find them… and I’d need a cellar.

Enjoy!
