B-Day Wine Review: 2007 · Justin · Isosceles · Paso Robles, CA

So, I turned 29 this weekend. Yup, kind of a big deal, but only because Carey and a few of my close friends surprised me with a weekend of shenanigans.

I was shuttled down the mountain at great haste by Carey to the Perfect Wife, a nice local bar and restaurant, for a few pops and a good meal. I do like going there, but her bubbly excitement excessive speed should have tripped something inside my substantial head—all was not as it seemed. But, it didn’t; nor did the massive casserole she made the day before. Mmm, I guess we’ll have leftovers.

So we sat at the bar, pulled on a draft beer, and I made casual conversation as Carey’s eyes darted around the bar in what might be interpreted as eager anticipation. Still nothing. Then 3 people that looked remarkably like my best friends strode up to the bar. Ah, I’ve been tricked!

2 nights, 1 piñata, and 9 bottles of wine later, our weekend was concluded. It was truly incredible and can’t thank Casey, Beth, Matt, and Carey enough. I have damned good friends.

The Friday night wine climax occurred at about 10:00 pm with an ’07 Justin Isosceles. Thanks, Matt!

From my tasting notebook:

Shockingly dark, like pen ink, with intense aromas of chocolate covered cherries, chalk, and cigar box. Smells like Fidel Castro’s lungs—and I love it. Touches of menthol and stone, gum rubber and vanilla. Glossy, almost oily in the mouth—far less tannic whomp than I was expecting, moderated by densely packed fruit. Bullish oak notes, very toasty and spiced gently. I thrive on the Cabernet Franc blended into Isosceles.

Isosceles is an age-worthy blend—it’s rise to glory can be lengthy, but it will be considerable, and there is more than a little old-world in it’s soul. The 2007 is very much in play and hitting it’s stride—in 5 years it will be a friggin stunner. When my friend Matt turns 35, he will tell you all about it.

Enjoy!
